Residents and staff at a Bradenton nursing home were jolted awake early when a man rammed his car into the front of the building.
That man, according to Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells, shot at employees and tried to shoot his way into the building before being confronted by deputies.
After exchanging gunfire with the sheriff's office, he is in custody and one deputy is recovering at the hospital, Wells said in a press conference.
The man's violent actions and attempts to "kill one of my deputies" made Wells "redneck mad," he said.
It all started just before 3:30 a.m. when dispatchers got a 911 call from an employee at the Aspire nursing home facility on Cortez Road West. The employee reportedly said a car had crashed into the front of the building and the driver got out and loaded a handgun.
Another employee reportedly approached the man, who Wells identified as 40-year-old Sean Calcutti, and tried to talk to him. Calcutti responded by shooting at the employee, Wells said.
"By the grace of God," the employee wasn't hit and was able to retreat into the nursing home, lock the doors and get to a safe place, the sheriff said.
But for whatever reason, Calcutti was determined to get inside and was shooting at the windows while deputies were en route, Wells said. He reportedly hid as he heard law enforcement coming.
Both Manatee County deputies and officers with Bradenton Police responded to the 911 call and began to search for Calcutti, Wells said. They quickly found him on the east side of the building. Deputies reportedly told him to show his hands and get on the ground.
Instead, "this ‘dirtbag’ decides it’s better for him to just start firing at my deputies,” Wells said.
Wells said deputies returned fire before one of them was hit in the arm. While another deputy sprang into action to provide medical aid, Calcutti took off.
Reinforcements arrived to help search for Calcutti, Wells said, including a K-9 unit from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Around 5:45 a.m., deputies found Calcutti and took him into custody. Wells said he was taken to the hospital for evaluation, but stressed Calcutti was not shot or injured.
Wells credits the quick actions of his deputy, who was off-duty and on the way home when he responded, to aid his colleague when he was shot. He even took it upon himself to drive the injured deputy to the hospital.
Both deputies will be on administrative leave per policy as the investigation is underway.
Calcutti faces numerous charges, including attempted murder, attempted murder of law enforcement and armed burglary, Wells said.
Investigators say there's no apparent connection between the nursing home and Calcutti, and his motivation for the attack isn't known.
The sheriff added Calcutti has an "extensive" criminal history in both New York and Florida.
"He should not, in my opinion, even be walking the streets of Manatee County," Wells added
The Sarasota Police Department is releasing the body-worn camera videos from the five officers involved in Monday's officer-involved shooting. VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED. All five officers are on administrative leave, which is policy for any officer-involved shooting. This incident remains under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
-------
The Sarasota Police Department engaged in an officer-involved shooting that occurred around 7:50 Monday morning near the intersection of U.S. 41 and University Parkway in the City of Sarasota.
One of our officers initiated a traffic stop on 34-year-old William Pickett's vehicle, as he had an active warrant out of Sarasota County. In the process of trying to get the Pickett into custody, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Pickett is deceased.
Several agencies assisted the Sarasota Police Department today, including the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, Sarasota County Fire Rescue, New College Police, Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport Police, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
The public is not in danger. Any law enforcement officer who could possibly be involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is our policy for any officer-involved shooting.
No further comment can be provided by our agency at this time. FDLE is taking over the investigation. Any further questions need to be directed to their office.

This is an ongoing internal affairs investigation. As soon as the Office of the Chief of Police was notified, an internal affairs investigation began immediately. In the utmost sense of transparency, we are releasing the body worn camera video. As a reminder, audio begins 30 seconds after the body worn camera is activated.
At about 7 pm on Sunday, two Sarasota Police officers on foot patrol contacted 32-year-old Malcom Johnson at Fredd Atkins Park. Johnson was wanted on a felony warrant out of Manatee County. On the body worn camera video, officers explain to Johnson he is wanted on a warrant and was going to be placed under arrest.
Johnson is seen on body worn camera video resisting while officers attempted to take him into custody and he refused to follow the officers commands. During Johnson’s resisting, one officer was injured, and another officer had his body worn camera knocked off. Johnson was eventually taken into custody and transported to one of the officer’s cars.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Travis Forrester in the Sarasota Police Department Internal Affairs Unit at 941-263-6027.

Surveillance video showed a patient actively loading a firearm early Wednesday morning inside the emergency room at Blake Hospital in Bradenton, police say. A staff member called 911 at 2:16 a.m. and reported the woman was seen on camera loading a gun in her purse.
Authorities say they were on their way to the hospital within a minute of the 911 call, with the first officer showing up by 2:20 a.m. and rushing in through an ambulance bay.
A security guard was also there and seized the handgun, police said. More police officers arrived and surrounded the woman, who was arrested.
The Bradenton Police Department said investigators seized a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard .380 handgun with an incorporated laser.
"The suspect’s purse contained one high-capacity (50 round) drum-style magazine with 36 loaded rounds; two magazines containing a total of 13 loaded rounds; and 14 loose rounds," the police department wrote in an email. "Additional witnesses stated they observed the suspect loading what appeared to be bullets into a magazine."
The woman was identified by police as 37-year-old Jamekeyra Ulisa Levertt-Chapman of Sarasota. She was charged with two felonies: introducing a firearm into a hospital and possession of a concealed weapon without a concealed weapon permit.
